The rapidly growing demand for plastic products worldwide, has resulted in a major plastics disposal problem. A solution was to make plastics biodegradable, which requires biodegradable masterbatches. Plastiblends (PBI) in association with Willow Ridge, Inc., USA offers a wide range of environmentally friendly degradable additive masterbatches. The degradable additive is an Oxo-Biodegradable additive .

The Degradation Process

This is generally a polyolefin (PE/PP), that undergoes initial degradation by an oxidative process, that is promoted by the inclusion of catalytic additives and subsequent  biodegradation.  Oxo- Biodegradable  process begins with the  exposure of the  polyolefin material to  either Heat or Ultra -  Violet radiation or  both. As the oxidation process progresses, the molecular weight of the material reduces to a point suitable for microbial ingestion. The by-products of this microbial ingestion is CO2, water and biomass, making it biodegradable. These are the same by-products that would be generated from the biodegradation process of wood, paper, leaves, grass clippings etc..
