Charge on plastic carry bags impact retail usage in India

The Ministry of Environment and Forests’ Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011, notification dated February 4 states that no carry bags shall be made available free of cost by retailers to customers. This has resulted in an initial drop of 30% in plastics bag consumption by retailers, since the first week of July, because of the introduction of the pricing policy.
