More than 50% of Worldwide Polyethylene consumption (approx. 32MMT) gets converted into film by various processing techniques. The future growth in consumption of PE will be more centric to China, India & the Middle East region.

The total PE film market in India would be around 800-900 KT per annum. Multilayer blown film production is expected to be around 320 KT for the current year and is growing at 30% annually. The major end use sectors of Multilayer film are lamination, Milk & Edible Oil constituting 84% of the total Multilayer films. Lamination industry is the largest consumer of around 180 KT of Multilayer film production.

Lamination films:
Demand drivers for lamination films are organized retail market, small packs (sachets) penetration in rural market and laminates imparting better shelf appeal.

Lamination films get converted into different forms for packaging of various products:

Laminates are packed on FFS machine to convert into      two/three side sealing pouches.
Pre-formed Pouches of varying sizes.
Stand up pouches with oval base at the bottom, zip lock       to open the pouch and re-seal or spout for liquid       packaging.
Gusseted stand up pouches for better shelf appeal.
Laminated pouches with handles, string & clips / closure     options for better handling.

New Trends:
Specialty LLDPEs have gained acceptance in the market      resulting in the down gauging of the films to around 30 -     40% and improvement in performance.
Nylon based five layer films have started giving better dart      impact properties in addition to improving the barrier      properties.
Multilayer films are also getting laminated with various      substrates using extrusion coating process (combination of      LDPE & Specialty PE) replacing the adhesives.

The Indian processors are adapting to newer technologies / materials available and are able to match or even exceed the end product characteristics compared to their international counterpart.
