In the composite industry, usually the mixing of fillers or reinforcing agents in polymers (typically polyolefins) is a tacky problem; caused due to the difference in polarities of the polymer matrix and the constituent fillers. In general, unfacilitated mixing of these two results in very poor or no adhesion, or in other words, composites with very poor properties. In order to promote adhesion or bonding, grafted polymers are added (often as coupling agents in the recipe). These grafted polymers often made of the same polymers that constitute the target matrix, making them easy to handle and very efficient.
When the adhesion promotion is required between two immiscible polymers, the same grafted polymers may also be incorporated as compatibilizers. In general terms, chemical compatibilizers and coupling agents are the same materials and are popularly traded as Grafted Polymers under the brand name OPTIM®.
At present, the company has a gamut of products suitable to a very wide window of processing applications and applicable to an equally large number of polymers. Riding on the same technology, Pluss® Polymers has also developed indigenous methods of producing not just 1st generation performance polymers, but has also contributed effectively in the area of polymer recycling, introducing ways to recycle polymers and still retain superior qualities in them.
OPTIM® (grafted polymers)
One of Pluss® Polymers’ most popular polymer products, OPTIM® is a range of modified polymers (usually PE or PP based) that have been functionalized (typically by Maleic anhydride grafting) and finds exceptional demand in blending, filling or toughening of polymers.
During compounding, OPTIM is added to enhance the performance of engineering thermoplastics and other technical polymers in the following ways:
- As a solid surfactant to increase interphase adhesion and to achieve compatibility between most commonly used polar polymers and polyolefins.
- As a coupling agent to promote chemical bonding between filler (talc, CaCO3, glass, ATH ...), fiber reinforcement and polymer matrix.
- By reacting with functional groups on the surface of the filler while the backbone of OPTIM® is miscible with polymer matrix. This mechanism improves surface wetting of the filler, its dispersion and the homogeneity of the composite.
- Increase the tensile and impact strengths of the composites.
- Enhance adhesion to functional layer-materials such as metal, glass, thermoset rubber and most polar substances.
- As an adhesive layers and this imparts good cohesion between layers of a multilayer-film used for packaging. The core layer is generally a barrier and the external layers are inert or sealable.

Following are the available grades:-
MAH Grafted PE (Chemically Modified Polyethylene)
OPTIM® E-126 is grafted LLDPE resins with anhydride functionality. It is used to improve the impact properties of nylon alloys and for up gradation of nylon scrap.
OPTIM® E-119 is grafted LLDPE resins with anhydride functionality. It is used as a coupling agent for halogen free flame retardant wire & cable compounds containing fillers such as Aluminum Tri Hydrate (ATH) or Magnesium Hydroxide Mg(OH)2). It has excellent adhesion to aluminum foil and also has good seal characteristics; which can be of advantage in processing and applications.
OPTIM® E-156 is grafted HDPE resin with anhydride functionality. It is used as coupling agent for fillers and reinforcements, as wetting and dispersing aid for Colors / Pigments. It is widely used as a coupling agent for agricultural waste and plastics scrap in order to produce wood plastic composites.
OPTIM® E-131 is grafted ULDPE resin with anhydride functionality. It is meant for toughening of Polyamides such as Nylon-6 and Nylon 6, 6 to produce a super tough nylon alloys. Mineral and glass filled nylons with enhanced impact strength can also be produced using this material.
MAH Grafted PP (Chemically Modified Polypropylene)
These OPTIM® grades are used as coupling agents for fillers and reinforcement such as talc, mica and glass fibers in PP compounds. They also act as wetting and dispersing aids for colours and pigments. The polar functionality in these materials facilitates printability, paintability and receptivity to adhesives in the case of extruded and moulded products. Also used as compatibilisers for Nylon-PP blends.
OPTIM® P-408 is grafted Polypropylene with anhydride functionality. It is used as a coupling agent for fillers and reinforcement, as Wetting and Dispersing Aid for Colors / Pigments and as compatibilizers for agricultural waste and plastic scrap for producing Wood plastic composites. It is also used for PP and Nylon blending.
OPTIM® P-425 is grafted Polypropylene with anhydride and acid functionality. It is used as a coupling agent for fillers like calcium carbonate, talc, mica etc and reinforcements like glass fibers in PP compounds. It also act as Wetting and Dispersing Aid for Colors / Pigments. Polar functionality in these materials facilitates printability, paintability and receptivity to adhesives in case of extruded and moulded products.
Glycidyl Methacrylate Grafted PE (Chemically Modified Polyethylene)
OPTIM® GE-344 is grafted ULDPE with Glycidyl Methacrylate functionality. It is used as an impact modifier for PolyethyleneTerephthalate, Polybutylene Terephthalate and Polycarbonate. It is also used to upgrade PC, PET and PBT scrap. It is also reported to compatibilise Bayblend (PC/ABS blend).
NOVIS™ (High MFI Polypropylene)
NOVIS™ P-390 is free radical modifier for polypropylene MFI. It is use to improve the MFI value of low MFI Polypropylene compounds. 2% addition of P-390 is reported to increase MFI of 15 to approx. 100 in PP compounds.
NOVIS™ P-490 is free radical modifier for polypropylene MFI. It is use in melt Blown technique for making non-woven products. It is also reported to work as a processing aid in PP compounds being an ultra high MFI PP.
OPTIPET™ Polymeric Chain Extender
OPTIPET™ 213M / 213P
It act as a chain extender that can react with the chains of the recycled or scrap PET and restore the original molecular weight as well as intrinsic viscosity. It is reported to improve anti split properties in polyesters straps. It is also used for the recycling of condensation thermoplastics and work as anti fibrillating agent for PET straps.
