Quality |
At STEER, Six Sigma is a way of life. It forms the basis for consistently supplying quality extrusion machines,
elements and other products on time to our customers. The Six Sigma goal results in less rework and wastage, improved
process reliability, consistent product quality, and total customer satisfaction. We constantly monitor our product
quality and processes and make studied improvements to them with the ultimate aim of being a Six Sigma company.
To realize the objective, the company has carried out various Six Sigma projects. The projects begin with
identifying product characteristics that are critical to satisfying both the physical and functional
requirements of the product or service demanded by the customer, known as CTQs (Critical to Quality).
This is followed by studying product capability and product performance, determining specific product elements
that contribute to achieving the CTQ characteristics and understanding process steps or process choice that
controls each critical characteristic. Then the process capability or ability to perform to required specifications,
for the manufacturing parts and processes that control the critical characteristics are determined and a list of
potential factors to change/improve is generated. This is done by connecting a customer CTQ to the quantitative
targets (QFD - Quality Function Deployment), establishing performance goals and analyzing internal/external
benchmarking data and entitlements, conducting G R&R (Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility) studies to
assess measurement variability, evaluating various input factors' effects on dimensional variations and other
statistical tools.
If a process capability fails to meet Six Sigma level of control, required actions using the Six Sigma
methodology are implemented (Here courses of actions necessary to improve process capability and technology
capability are distinguished). Then essential steps are taken to ensure that the process capability improvements
are sustained or made to last by implementing changes in the ISO 9001 Quality System Documentation. These have led
to tighter process control or implementation of better technology
By continuing to carry out Six Sigma projects periodically with enhanced performance standards and
by inducing and sustaining process capability improvements, the company boldly anticipates Six Sigma
outputs satisfying both customer and internal CTQ characteristics.

Infrastructure |
|
STEER manufactures Co-rotating Twin Screw Extruders in sizes from lab extruder models to large extruders
of 1000 kg/hr and more. The extruders are assembled in a modern factory shop floor with an area of 5500 sq feet,
including an assembly area, air-conditioned control room and a stores facility. Provision exists to
conduct process / production line trials through the establishment of a complete extrusion line including
input feeders and a pellitizer. Electric power connections, cooling tower water connections, and compressed
air connections, have been established to conduct full load trials. The materials and components utilized in
building the extruders are of the highest quality & brand.

Twin Screw Extruders
Products - Co-rotating Twin Screw Extruders
The Co-rotating Twin Screw Extruder and the associated automation are state-of-the-art. The use of
technology to achieve optimum energy saving screw geometry, use of special materials and specific surface
treatment, incorporation of modern drive systems, and enveloping all this through user-friendly and efficient
automation, has empowered STEER to offer a highly efficient Co-rotating Twin Screw Extruder loaded with positive features

Twin Screw Elements
Products - Twin Screw Compounding Elements & Components
We manufacture fully wiping (self cleaning), Twin Screw Compounding Elements using high technology
CAD/CAM facilities. The designs of the elements are made from basic compounding machine parameters such
as barrel-diameter, center distance and constant clearance, and are completely interchangeable. The computer
aided engineering methods developed by Dr. Babu Padmanabhan, CEO of STEER, ensure a fully wiping profile for
any lead of screw, any number of starts and any machine parameter.
The company also specializes in the manufacture of high-free volume elements, transition elements
and various types of kneading blocks.
The manufacturing challenges are, working on tough-to-machine tool steels, achieving
several geometric accuracy's with complex shapes, dealing with a very large number of different
elements and producing made-to-order parts with small lead-times.

Heart Valve Frames
Products - Heart Valve Frames
We manufacture and supply Heart Valve Frames to TTK Pharma. These frames are used in the indigenously
developed Chitra Valve. The valve is implanted in the human heart to cure a condition medically known
as rheumatic heart disease. We can produce nearly 2,000 frames annually. This is still a small portion
of the requirement of valves and the company is geared to manufacture higher volumes in the future.
The manufacturing challenges are in working on high Chromium-Cobalt alloy that is tough to machine,
machining small and intricate shape of the heart valve frame, fixturing of the complex thin walled
component without stress for multiple machining setups.
