20% PTA used to make bottle-grade polyester in China's domestic market

23-Jul-08
In China's domestic market about 20% of its Pure Terephthalic Acid (PTA) consumption goes toward manufacture of bottle-grade PET, mainly used in packing beverages, especially sodas. 5% of its total PTA is consumed to make film-grade polyester, with the associated products used as packaging material, films and magnetic tapes. A major chunk of about 75% of PTA is used to make polyester fibre. This is in sharp contrast to the global standards, where over 90% of the world's PTA is used to produce PET. PTA is an important organic raw material, widely used mainly in the chemical fibre industry, the light industry, the electronics industry and the construction industry.
