Thermal Lamination is lamination by application of heat and pressure. The adhesive is pre-coated on the base film (either BOPP/PET) by extrusion process. After this, the film is used for lamination directly.

In conventional lamination, the film, first, pick up glue / adhesive and, then, is laminated with the board. Through conventional lamination is currently an accepted process worldwide, the laminators are shifting to thermal lamination to be free from hassles. Thermal films are non polluting and easy to use.

Thermal films are used for lamination and encapsulation purposes. Encapsulation means lamination on both sides of the board / paper. Normally, PET is widely used for encapsulation purposes, as the base film used is much thicker.

Thermal films are manufactured by coating a layer of adhesive resin on to BOPP/Polyster, the base film. The coated film is dried before it is wound on to a core. The product is then ready for use.

During the lamination process, the adhesive resin on the base film is softened or liquefied by application of heat. Once liquefied, the adhesive is spread across the surface and with pressure, forced into the pores of the document/board. The adhesive then hardens as it cools creating a permanent bond between board and the film. Temperature applied ranges between 90ºC - 120ºC and pressure between 3-5 kg/cm2
