PVC which is a chlorinated hydrocarbon polymer is present in virtually all areas of human activity. It’s basic building blocks are chlorine, carbon, and hydrogen.
These elements are obtained from sea salt (sodium chloride) and crude oil or natural gas, both of which are mixtures of hydrocarbons. PVC is a thermoplastic, which means that it softens during heating and hardens upon cooling.

PVC was first produced back in 1872. However, when it was heated or exposed to sunlight, the molecules broke up and an acidic gas was released.
Decades later, scientists discovered that chemicals could be added to the PVC to help make it more stable and resistant to light and heat.

PVC was used during World War II to replace rubber wires in electrical cables when rubber was in short supply.
Since then it has replaced rubber for insulation and found many other applications.

In more than 60 years of production and commercial use, PVC has contributed greatly to the development of modern life and has become the second most popular plastic in the world.
It is one of the most thoroughly researched materials and results so far have proved that PVC is a safe product for use and disposal.
