Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the second-largest thermoplastic manufactured worldwide. Various end-use markets such as construction, consumer goods and packaging registered a fall in activity across the world during the financial crisis of 2008-09. Though the PVC market is back on its growth path after experiencing collapsed demand in several markets, overall performance is expected to remain weak over the short term as the industry struggles to emerge from problems such as sluggish recovery in the construction sector, lingering overcapacity and thinning operating margins. The global market for PVC products witnessed a contraction in demand amid the financial crisis and de-stocking that prevailed across the value chain. Read more in
Mineral fillers are fine particle Inorganic powders. It is essential to break up these agglomerates to disperse the filler particles uniformly in the Polymer Matrix requiring energy additional to the energy required for melt formation and mixing. The energy requirements and compounding cost depend on various factors like the physical form of the polymer, its polarity, type of filler, whether the filler is untreated or treated and processing behavior. Filled Polyolefins (10-40%) are costlier per kg. than the base polymer because compounding costs outweigh the lower filler cost. The volume costs go up sharply with density increase, but requirements of better stiffness in auto components, moulded furniture and other technical parts is the driving force for filler addition. Normally filler addition does not automatically lead to cost savings with Polyolefins as it does with PVC. Read more in
India is one of the largest producers of commodities like foodgrains, sugar, fruits, vegetables and tea. Due to varied crop pattern, localized production of commodities, safe and hygienic storage, transportation and distribution and protection against wastage, hence packaging is of utmost importance. Huge losses have been observed in agriculture produce in India. Wastage varies from 5 to 35% depending on nature of crops. Majority of wastage takes place in each of the above steps viz. storage, transportation and at retail market due to improper packaging. Bulk Packaging provides a solution for commodities weighing 10 to 50 Kg during handling, storage and transportation. Read more in
Carbon fiber enables improved performance in automotive, aerospace, consumer durables and sports industry. However, it is too expensive for widespread utilization in most high volume applications. In addition, the methods for manufacturing carbon fiber reinforced composite structures tend to be slow, labor intensive and inconsistent, resulting in product quality. Research is being conducted to develop lower cost, high volume technologies for producing carbon fiber and composite materials containing carbon fiber. Read more in
The Indian packaging industry is a combination of the unorganised small and medium local companies and the organized large Indian and International companies that may be about 5-10% of the industry strength, but nevertheless controls over 70% of the market by volume. In select markets where plastic and paper compete as packaging materials, plastic is expected to increase its share of the market to 49% (in volume). India’s flexible packaging market has accelerated on account of several factors including a burgeoning middle class, conversion of traditional rigid packaging into flexible forms, favourable government tax structure, influx of multinational companies, etc. The rise in organised retailing in India’s second-tier cities made for a competitive packaging market in 2008. Growth of global converted flexible packaging market has been propelled by rising demand from consumer goods, food and beverage industries in developing economies. The steady growth of the global packaging industry only took a breather during the few years of recession in the past, and the recent one in 2008-2009, which halted and even declined growth rates during the period. Product differentiation, development and innovation persist as key growth drivers for the industry along with new application breakthroughs in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. Despite apparently strong recent performance of the petrochemical industry, many downside risks hang over the industry in the near term, threatening to stall the recovery. The outlook for the petrochemical industry depends upon many factors beyond producer’s control. Though the global economy has swiftly emerged from recession in 2010, high unemployment and the mounting deficit in national accounts threaten to restrict demand in coming years, potentially faltering the recovery. Meanwhile, short term developments in the supply side are set to lengthen markets as major new capacity is commissioned in Asia and the Middle East. Read more in
An abundance of hydrocarbon reserves has helped Iran launch massive investment in a move to monetize its feedstock, despite US led sanctions impacting it’s ability to become the preeminent supplier of petrochemicals, due to the restrictions on foreign investments in the country. Iran has invested enormous amounts of capital to set up large downstream petrochemical industry with value-added products, in a drive to boost profits, provide jobs to its growing population and diversify its exports. However, this industry continues to be plagued with problems like increasing price of gas feedstock to petrochemicals plants, feedstock problem during winter on reduced ethane allocations by the Government, etc. Read more in
Growing global population requires yield of crops to be increased, and extended growing seasons. Polyethylene film plays an important role in utilizing scarce water resources (mulching) and growing food in inclement weather conditions (green house). Mulch PE is the largest segment with about 40% of the total PE film used in agriculture. Mulch film raises soil temperature and conserves moisture. Crops are able to grow in a modified environment, allowing plants to grow earlier and to a better size and quality. Read more in
