Traditional bioplastic packaging technologies based on starch, cellulose and polyester are each forecast to show a decline in market share to 2020. From 2010, bioplastic technology is expected to change with the commercialisation of bioplastics produced directly by natural/genetically modified (GM) organisms and the introduction of non-biodegradable, bio-derived polyethylene (PE). These materials are expected to account for a quarter of total bioplastic packaging market demand by 2020. PHA are forecast to achieve a CAGR of 41% and bio-derived PE is forecast to grow at a staggering 83% over the period. Carbon fibers are noted for their high strength and stiffness, light weight, good fatigue resistance, good electrical conductivity, chemical inertness and low coefficient of thermal expansion. They are used primarily as reinforcing agents in high performance composites. Major advances in technology and processing have dramatically expanded the demand for high-performance carbon fibers. Since cost is a major factor affecting demand, continued improvements in performance coupled with increased availability are expected to boost consumption in all regions and applications. It is estimated that over 2.5 mln tons of polymer are used in thin-walled plastics packaging sector in Europe, with dairy and disposables comprising the largest sectors. Polypropylene and polystyrene hold the biggest share followed by PET, and there is also some PVC used in these applications. Polypropylene is an ideal solution to the challenges of improving the environmental responsibility of plastic packaging. It has a low carbon footprint, is easily recycled in existing waste management systems, allowing the material to be reused indefinitely. It does not exhibit undesirable side effects during recycling. The major limitation of using PP as a packaging material is its lack of transparency. New additives called clarifying agents have been introduced to be incorporated in PP to achieve the desired clarity, haze reduction, easy dispersion of clarifying agents, organoleptics like taste and odour. Active and intelligent packaging are being developed to actively prevent food spoilage, increase shelf life, enhance product attributes like appearance, taste, flavor, aroma etc., maintain quality of the packaged products, provide information about the quality of the packaged food during transport and storage. A new regulation 450/2009 has been introduced by the European Commission on active and intelligent packaging. All existing products must be approved by 21 January 2011 to stay on the market. The world's first commercial polyester material to offer pH control that remains gentle to human skin has been developed. The fabric is expected to meet growing consumer demands for clothing with value-added properties such as gentleness to skin, odor prevention, antibacterial and stain resistance. A new method for treating polymeric fibers with a low-temperature partially ionized gas increases the ability of the fibers to attract water, which is necessary to make them easier to process. Non-halogenated flame retardants are becoming increasingly popular replacements to TBBA in PCBs due to environmental pressures. While the PCB industry recognizes that one-to-one replacement of TBBA is unlikely, there is growing recognition that mixtures based on non-halogenated alternatives can perform synergistically to provide the cost and performance characteristics necessary for commercial success.
