Demand for natural fiber composites are largely driven by increasing environmental awareness. Due to low cost, low density, acceptable specific properties, ease of separation, enhanced energy recovery, CO2 neutrality, biodegradability and recyclable properties, natural fiber use in composites is gaining as demand grows for component materials that are durable, reliable, lightweight, with mechanical properties better than those of traditional materials. To know about the top continent in terms of total NFC consumption; the emerging, future markets, emerging applications with significant growth potential, industry challenges, etc, read
Recent breakthroughs in technology have made it productive and profitable to tap into the vast amount of shale gas resources in the United States. As a result, the US petrochemical industry is announcing significant capacity expansions, reversing a decade-long decline. A new competitive advantage has already emerged for US petrochemical producers. Further development will lead to a significant expansion in domestic petrochemical capacity. At a time when USA is facing persistent high unemployment and loss of high paying manufacturing jobs, these new resources provide an opportunity. Read more in
The global polyolefin market is changing dramatically in response to the quickly advancing industrialization process in emerging markets, amid improvements in global communications and trade liberalization. In terms of consumption of polyolefins, the market is increasingly being driven by Asia Pacific, principally China. Global demand for polyolefins was estimated at 116 mln tons in 2010 and is forecast to grow at approximately 5% CAGR over 2011-2017. To know about the increases in consumption, investments in polyolefin production capacity, demand-supply balance, growth regions, etc, read
The last two decades have seen development of solar cars powered by energy from the sun. Electricity is stored in the batteries when the sun is shining and this power can be used when sunlight is restricted. The batteries are normally nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd), Lithium ion or Lithium polymer batteries. The huge cost of these cars is mainly due to the large number of expensive and delicate photovoltaic solar panels that are needed to power the vehicle, as well as the high cost of lightweight materials such as titanium composites, carbon fibre and fibre glass. Several teams have developed lightweight solar cars with new materials, combined with efficient design. Read more in
With a share of 50%, plastics now represent the largest group of materials used in medical technology. The building blocks of advanced medical devices are biomedical polymers tailored to achieve specific performance properties. A growing number of surgical procedures are carried out using minimally invasive techniques. This has created a multibillion-dollar market for specialized devices and instruments used for these procedures. Selecting the appropriate polymer for these devices requires an understanding of the biological, physical and chemical, characteristics needed. To know more about the mechanical properties demanded by this sector, material biocompatibility, growing markets across the world, growing applications, new markets, technological advances, advantages to doctors and patients, etc, read
Bioabsorbable materials are a class of compounds that can be absorbed by the body over time. A material for bioabsorbable stents should possess enough mechanical strength to hold open the blocked vessel and provide mechanical support without significant recoil or bioactive remodeling, and have a degree of fracture toughness to avoid cracks and broken struts, along with non-toxicity. Materials that have potential use for bioabsorbable stent preparation include various biodegradable polyesters, polyanhydrides, poly(orthoesters), PUs, poly(ether amides), poly(amino acids) and tyrosine-derived Pcs. A survey provided dramatic differences between geographical regions in usage trends of bioabsorbable, bifurcated and drug-eluting stents, stent-grafts and vulnerable plaque treatment. Read more in
Researchers have so far, only been able to create devices that are bendable but can't stretch, or stretchable pieces that connect smaller, rigid LEDs. A step forward in handy electronics has been taken with the creation of the first fully stretchable organic light-emitting diode (OLED). One challenge in creating stretchable electronics is to develop an electrode that maintains its conductivity when deformed. To achieve this property, some researchers have turned to carbon nanotubes because they are stretchable, conductive, and appear transparent in thin layers, letting light shine through. Read in
Global economic concerns continued to rattle market confidence in October, causing petrochemical prices to drop at a faster pace than input costs. In Europe, the naphtha market struggled against lack of downstream demand due to a weak plastics sector. The US economy, however, showed some positive developments. The Indian economy is being impacted by the global economic slowdown and uncertain financial markets with all the lead indicators of growth showing a downward trend. The IMF lowered its forecasts for Asian growth that could further stifle demand for petrochemicals as production of everything would be trimmed accordingly. Read more in
