Cereplast, Inc. developer and manufacturer of proprietary, bio-based, sustainable bioplastics has secured additional patent protection for the Cereplast Compostables™ Resin family of products from the European Patent Office. The company has developed and commercialized two families of resins: the Cereplast Compostables™ and the Cereplast Hybrid Resins™. Each family of resins has several patents underlying the technology, covering primarily the formulation of the resins. Currently, Cereplast holds four patents with an additional 23 patents pending both in the United States and abroad covering both resin families.
Cereplast originally filed for patent protection in 2004 and the first patent was granted in 2006 for the company's proprietary resin formulation. In addition, Cereplast acquired the exclusive rights to two additional patents from the University of Nebraska related to thermoplastic starch. The company has an on-going program to continue to develop and acquire patents from universities around the world. Cereplast Compostables™ are renewable, ecologically sound substitutes for petroleum-based plastic products, replacing nearly 100% of the petroleum-based additives used in traditional plastics with renewable resources. All Cereplast Compostables™ are certified as biodegradable and compostable in the United States and Europe, meeting BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) standards for compostability (ASTM 6400 D99 and ASTM 6868), and European Bioplastics standards (EN 13432). Cereplast Hybrid ResinsTM, also known as BIOPOLYOLEFINS™, replace 50% or more of the petroleum content used in traditional plastic resins with bio-based materials such as starches from plants. With nearly the same physical characteristics and price point as traditional polyolefin, Cereplast Hybrid ResinsTM are an ideal way for plastic manufactures to reduce their reliance on petroleum and improve their environmental impact. Cereplast Hybrid Resins™ are primarily targeted at durable goods applications.
