Polyurethane market in India is experiencing double-digit growth from this relatively low base. India will play an important role in the future development of the polyurethanes sector in Asia. From the various applications, polyurethane foam production holds the largest market potential in India, with the rise in urbanization, the burgeoning middle class population, and increased consumer spending power. Notwithstanding the significant growth in China, the importance of the emerging markets of India cannot be overlooked. With a population of over one billion people, less than 10% are estimated to use foam-based mattresses for sleeping. Majority of the price sensitive market prefers to use low cost coir (coconut fibre), latex and cotton mattresses, at times subsidised or protected by import duties on substitute materials.
The market still requires development in terms of appropriate products, logistics and technical and marketing expertise. Existing foam market in India is highly fragmented and localised, as the existing transport infrastructure and long distances make it difficult for regional producers to expand.
