Upward bubble blown film from PP offers transparency, resistance to impact, puncture and tear

PP film is generally manufactured either by biaxial oriented process giving BOPP film or by a downward bubble tubular quenched film process giving TQPP. The upward bubble commonly used for PE as well as PVC produces translucent film with haze of more than 30-40%. PP is slower in crystallization compared to PE, making it difficult to generate smaller crystals. Large crystals cause opacity and result in loss of transparency.
LyondellBasell, the largest PP manufacturer and a pioneer in research & development, has now developed Adflex 7492 XCP which offers a combination of transparency and resistance to impact, puncture and tear. Based on its proprietary Catalloy technology, this new grade offers transparency of 13% haze value at 30 m (micron) film thickness. It exhibits an exceptional balance of softness, film clarity and good processing performance. Until now, several polypropylene products offered customers a wide range of characteristics for blown film applications. But when customers required transparency, no resin grade on the market could address this need. The new grade will open up newer applications like industrial packaging and agricultural which are yet not available due to property deficiencies of PP film, helping PP achieve a greater share of the film market. The film will provide a competitive alternative on the market that delivers exceptional transparency, while maintaining softness, mechanical properties, good bubble stability and throughput. The resins property profile will enable customers to down-gauge film thickness while maintaining the rigidity of newly designed blends and co-ex film structures. This performance combination enables possible cost reductions through reduced material consumption. Blown film equipment costs less than stenter orientation process required for BOPP film. It will bring medium/small sized processors into PP film market. This will also fuel better growth of PP in film market.
