15-Dec-16 Year-to-date polyethylene production at Colombia's Barrancabermeja oil refinery surpassed 50,000 tons, its highest level in 15 years. Full-year production is expected to total 55,000 tons. For Ecopetrol this increased production has allowed him to be placed in the national and international markets this product at a price of US$180 per barrel equivalent, taking advantage of the good demand in new highly profitable markets in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Peru, which has left income incremental of 90 billion pesos this year.
High levels of production achieved are due to the excellent performance and operational readiness of units and Ethylene Cracking II, responsible for delivering the load of the two polyethylene units available to the refinery. This milestone was also made possible by the recovery and technological upgrading plant Turboexpander, unit remained out of service for more than 12 years and was in the process of divesting the low availability of natural gas rich in ethane.
Thanks to the teamwork of engineers refinery in the first half of 2015 the plant was put into service in order to maximize the economic value of the petrochemical segment by the removal of ethane and some contaminants contained in natural gas from Gibraltar new field, besides the Payoa, Cantagallo and Province fields for subsequent conversion to ethylene in the ethylene unit II.
Orlando Diaz Montoya, general manager of the refinery, said the effort, discipline and operational excellence of employees of supplier plants of the raw material and train polyethylene to meet the goals and contribute significantly to the increase in the margin economic development of the refinery.
