14-Apr-17 The global anti microbial food packaging market is estimated to register CAGR of 5.1% from 2017 to 202, as per Research and Reports.
The prevention of food contamination with the help of antimicrobial agents is creating a lot of scientific interest which is leading to extensive research. Antimicrobial agent is used either directly into food particle or to the packaging material which is to be maintained for the products quality, as well as its safety. Majorly, chicken packaging industries is expected to boost the market growth during the forecast period. Gradual decrease in the antimicrobial concentration can lead to the development of antimicrobial-resistant mutants which is expected to hinder the market growth. Increase in active type of packaging are anticipated to create growth opportunity for the market in near future.
Depending on antimicrobial agent type, antimicrobial food packaging market is segmented into silver, copper, zinc and other. Silver is used more in packaging systems because silver nano particles possess more antimicrobial effect than the other types. Also, copper has the ability to kill bacteria and hence can be used for such packaging systems. Further, Zinc oxide nano particles are integrated into several medical and skin coatings because of their antimicrobial and antifungal properties.
Considering the types of materials, antimicrobial food packaging market is segmented into high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), paperboard, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE) and others. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is stronger, thicker, less flexible and more brittle than LDPE and a better barrier to gases and moisture. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is heat sealable, inert, odor free and shrinks when heated. It is a good moisture barrier but is relatively permeable to oxygen and is a poor odor barrier. Titanium nitride nanoparticles in the PET type help create an antimicrobial environment.
In controlled released packaging technology active compounds such as antimicrobials or antioxidants are first incorporated into the package and then released to the food in a controlled manner to inhibit microbial growth. Moreover, active packaging helps in moisture control, metal chelation, corrosion inhibition, and oxygen control among others.
Generally cartons are used for packaging of liquids such as milk, milk products, juices and other. Pouches help protect semisolids, solid products and the rest are used for solid food product protection. Meat, fish and chicken contain live cells and enzymes which boost the process of spoilage. Hence this is controlled by usage of tightly packed pouches which help preserve the food. North America and Europe is expected to show sustainable growth during the forecast period due to high living standard and stringent government rules and regulations.
