A new universal antimicrobial masterbatch that is compatible with all common polymers like Polyethylenes, Polypropylene, PVC and Polystyrene, and does not compromise on the antibacterial results due to this flexibility, has been recently developed. Independent testing to the JIS Z 2801 standard has consistently demonstrated an excellent performance, with a reduction in bacterial population of up to 99.9999% within 24 hours. The antimicrobial masterbatch is effective against mould as well as illness causing bacteria including MRSA, E.coli and Salmonella. While most antimicrobial products have no control over the release rate of the active agent, SteriTouch® works by release on demand', prolonging the effective life of the product. Accelerated life testing has demonstrated that the antimicrobial masterbatch will remain active for the lifetime of the coating.
While the new antimicrobial masterbatch is used predominantly in the manufacture of healthcare equipment, it has potential benefits for industrial and consumer products. The masterbatch will reduce the possibility of mould and bacteria growing in the difficult to clean areas in sports bottles such as inside the cap and bottle neck. The coating of black mould' (aspergillus niger) on bathroom products, shower enclosures and curtains, can be effectively inhibited by this masterbatch. The advanced anti-mould properties also make this effective in applications such as building materials such as PVC window frames and rainwater products.
The antimicrobial masterbatch is an innovative product which utilizes the natural antimicrobial properties of silver, regarded as a healing tool to control infections and reduce spoilage. Silver is able to destroy bacteria by preventing the reforming of the cell wall following cell division. Since this is a non-genetic process, there is no possibility of bacterial resistance occurring through the development of mutagens (genetic mutations). |
