Plastics stretch/shrink hoods for packing products in larger quantity have gained immense popularity. Generally LLDPE based on higher alpha olefins has been used for stretch hoods while LDPE continues to be used for shrink films. These films are usually manufactured from multi-extrusion systems.
Recent developments introduced have aided in improved performance. Basell Polyolefins has developed a system based on their advanced Polyolefins called Adflex grades. Exxon Mobil, another global player in Polyolefins, has recently introduced a new co-extrusion system based on a new range of PE resin called Nexxstar, essentially high performance copolymers. The use of Nexxstar along with Exceed Metallocene LLDPE was demonstrated on the stretch hoods on Lachenmeier A/S machinery. The study revealed that they outshine vis-s-vis performance cost as well as operating cost and also help in increasing packaging speed. The hood structure offers outstanding toughness and excellent optical properties. These hoods have capability of providing the same holding force at lower thickness because of outstanding mechanical strength. These structures also furnish excellent puncture resistance and tear strength. These properties help in improving the packaging integrity leading to less damage to the product. These new alternates from ExxonMobil and Basell Polyolefins will benefit the film converting industry.
