BOPP Woven Fabric Laminates & Applications for Sustainable Packaging

09-Nov-19

In the present article, we will discuss about eco-friendly BOPP Laminated PP Woven fabric Bags, importance & available solutions to manufacture it cost-effectively.

This bag is known for its strength & durability, hence used in bulk packaging of food grains, flour, resins, building materials, fertilizers, pet foods, cattle feed etc.

Let’s review briefly various processes involved in manufacturing these Bags. PP tapes are produced using T-die extrusion and Stretching process. These tapes are woven on Circular Looms to produce Fabric. BOPP film is also produced by T-die Extrusion and stretching process in required widths and thicknesses. The BOPP film is then Printed on rotogravure printing machine. The Woven fabric, and the Printed BOPP film is then Laminated in extrusion coating process. Finally a Sack / Bag maker will convert the fabric in to a final bag.

Considering government's regulations & environmental concerns, these fabric laminated bags in packaging, play an important role. Government has notified to phase out the use of Composite non-recyclable laminates and is encouraging use of ‘Monolithic (Single Polymer Family) films / Laminates’ which would be easily recyclable. Woven sack is perfect matching case, as it is a monolithic structure – of Polypropylene and hence will be easily recycled.

Pouches/sacks made out of BOPP laminated woven fabric can easily replace the non-recyclable PET/PE laminated pouches for packing food grains, flour, resins, building materials fertilizers, pet food, cattle feed etc. in to 5 & 10 kg packs, which have grown very fast in past few years.More over, in many cases weight of these bags may be lower as compared to weight of an equivalent PET/PE Pouch, saving on material costs for Brand owners.

However, it's use for smaller packs has been restricted due to limitations on producing small size tube of woven fabric on circular looms. A perfect value for money solution is offered by Back seam BOPP laminated sacks/pouches. These are produced from laminated woven fabric in sheet form, converts into tube with help of hot melt glue, cut according to the required length and stitched at the bottom. Till now, available technology in market, involved multistage processes and these processes faced lot of problems of consistency, quality, reliability and very low outputs and a lot of manual labor. This restricted growth of back seam sack/pouch market.

MAMATA has launched Vega SM 650 - A fastest Back seam sack maker with maximum speed of up to 100 sacks per minute. On this machine Back Seam Sacks / Pouches are produced in a single process from Laminated Sheet to a Finished Sack / Pouch. This avoids traditional way of Offline stitching process & labors, movement of material in different processes, wastage during movement and other production losses. It also allows you to get consistent quality and high outputs, which is always a challenge while having manual stitching process, thus saving a lot in conversion cost. It also eliminates dependence of production on labor.
