165,000 tpa methanol plant planned by Assam Petrochemicals

24-Jun-08
Assam Petrochemicals Ltd. plans to set up a 165,000 tpa methanol plant at Namrup at an investment outlay of US$125 mln. APL is currently in talks with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Limited (OIL) for supply of natural gas as feedstock for the project. APL has not yet received gas allocation for the new plant, but ONGC and OIL are reportedly scouting new gas reserves in upper Assam. Demand for methanol in India is expected to reach 1.1 mln tons this year, out of which the country currently imports 500,000 tons.
