Bayer to set up 250,000 tpa TDI plant in Shanghai as a part of its integrated site plan

Bayer, a German firm operating businesses in chemicals, drugs and agrochemicals has come to a decision of building a toluene diisocyanate (TDI) plant in Shanghai this year, affirming its commitment to the world's biggest market. The Shanghai-based TDI plant is set to start operations by 2010 will have an initial capacity of 250,000 tpa which will later be augmented to 300,000 tpa in future, thereby totaling Bayer's TDI capacity to 700,000 tpa. Expecting the China demand for TDI to rise by 8% and the global market to grow by 4%, the plant will cite firm's consolidation of its TDI business, an important feedstock for polyurethane foam used for upholstered furniture, mattresses and car seats. The Shanghai-based TDI plant is an important element of the firm's large investment programme for an integrated site in Shanghai which is worth US$3.1 bln by 2012.
