Demand from Germany leads European adhesive market

07-Apr-11
Ceresana Research has analyzed the European adhesive market: Germany accounts for approx. 18.5% of all demand, followed by France, Italy and the UK. We expect that the adhesives revenue in Europe will reach €8.25 billion by 2017. Above average increases of 2.7% to 4.8% were achieved on the sales markets in Russia, Poland, and Turkey. In Western Europe, the demand for adhesives is especially growing in Germany, Finland, and Sweden. Paper, packaging, and the construction industry are the most important fields of application. The demand of these three areas makes up more than 58% of the adhesives manufacturing. The construction industry provides slight demand stimuli through new constructions of buildings and publicly financed infrastructure projects. Due to EU subsidies, this effect can be felt more clearly in Eastern than in Western Europe. An ongoing trend is the enhancement of energy efficiency and a reduction in the CO2 emissions. Adhesives are increasingly needed for the renovation of buildings. We anticipate that the demand for adhesives in medical engineering and the automobile, electrical and electronics industry will see growth rates of 2.7% to 3.8%. Especially manufacturers of acrylate adhesives, which are needed for cars and rail vehicles, are profiting from the industry's good economic development. The same applies to epoxy resin adhesives that are additionally used in aircraft construction. Radiation curing adhesives are expected to record considerable growth in the electrical and electronics industry. Natural adhesives made from starch or cellulose and animal glues will especially see increases in the paper, cardboard and packaging sector. The substitution of solvent-based adhesives by solvent-free adhesives is continuing in Western Europe. Companies in Eastern Europe are also increasingly investing in the development of new adhesive systems. In general, environmentally friendly adhesives are gaining importance. There are different starting points, from renewable resources to the use of non-polluting additives.
