Dimeric TDI for aqueous PU dispersions with improved physical properties

23-Apr-09
Rhein Chemie (Germany), a wholly owned subsidiary of LANXESS, has demonstrated advantages of using solid, dimeric toluene diisocyanate (TDI) to formulate storage-stable, one-component polyurethane adhesive systems with improved physical properties. Solid dimeric TDI is a versatile additive for PU coatings, adhesives and sealants. The use of water-borne coatings and adhesives is continually on the rise not only due to VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) and environmental concerns but also due to volatility of crude oil prices. Environmentally friendly coatings and adhesive systems contain reduced amounts of organic compounds. While coating and adhesive dispersions applied without additional isocyanate provide good mechanical properties, crosslinking with special isocyanates can significantly improve physical properties such as tensile strength and adhesion, at the same time increasing tensile modulus and heat distortion temperature.
