Ethylene spot prices in East Asia have seen a 5% increase from a recent low to reach about US$1,100/ton , thanks to robust demand in China and supply constraints, as per asia.nikkei.com. Demand has seen a boost in China, where production of polystyrene foam insulation is in overdrive as construction work picks up during summer. A surge in demand kept Chinese output of styrene monomer high in May, increasing 10% from a year earlier.
Higher ethylene can also be attributed to supply constraints caused by troubles at production facilities in Singapore, Thailand and Saudi Arabia.
