Engineering major Larsen and Toubro (L&T) is considering a planned co-operation with State-owned aircraft manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to establish a separate facility for composites for aircraft applications. L&T is expected to deliver sub-assemblies and composites for some of the family of aircraft produced by HAL. This is considered a major step to augment the indigenous production of fighter jets in the country.
HAL, tasked with the replacement of the 250 'Kiran' trainer fleet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) along with the production of LCA, multi-role civilian aircraft 'Saras', Hawk AJT, ALH and Sukhoi, is likely to make more than 500 aircraft in the next decade. L&T is already estimated to have started work on some composite items for the advanced light helicopter (ALH) project through its existing facilities.
