Leaning tower over Houston Ship Channel causes closure to top US petrochemical port

08-Oct-10
A leaning tower over the Houston Ship Channel has caused the closure of the waterway to the top US petrochemical port, including four refineries providing 4.9% of US refining capacity, as per Reuters. A total of 48 ships were waiting on Tuesday to transit the channel, eleven of the vessels were inbound tankers. The Coast Guard shut the ship channel on Sunday morning after a barge struck a high power line tower linking Houston and Baytown, Texas. The tower is leaning on the barge and the power lines are dangling over the ship channel, where they might be snagged by a ship and cause the tower to topple into the waterway. If the tower fell over, it would block the channel for several days.
