18-May-09
Russia's Lukoil Group oil and gas company has resumed commercial polypropylene production at the Stavrolen petrochemicals plant almost a year after fire and an explosion in April 2008. The PP unit at the Stavrolen subsidiary's site in Budyennovsk, Russia was closed after an explosion in a propylene container that led to a fire in the propylene polimerisation reactor. The whole unit has been completely overhauled since the accident which also left three employees with severe burn injuries. About 67,300 tons of general-purpose polypropylene is being planned to be produced before the end of this year. Nameplate capacity at the plant, originally commissioned in 2007, totals to 120,000 tpa.
