State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic's (SOCAR) subsidiary SOCAR Polymer has selected Maire Tecnimont for engineering, construction, and procurement (EPC) services on its planned polypropylene plant in Sumgayit, Azerbaijan. Under the €350 mln contract, Maire Tecnimont will complete engineering services, equipment and material supply, erection and construction activities, including installation of relevant utilities and off sites facilities. Maire Tecnimont's subsidiaries Tecnimont and Kinetics Technology will manage work under the contract.
To be installed at Sumgait Chemical Industrial Park, the polypropylene plant will feature LyondellBasell's Spheripol process technology to produce around 180,000 tpa of petrochemical products. The first-of-its-kind facility in the country will use propylene feedstock from the existing naphtha cracker. Maire Tecnimont CEO Pierroberto Folgiero said: "This result confirms the group's distinctive competences in the polyolefins sector and its capabilities in implementing relevant EPC projects in its historical core business.
"We are eager to support SOCAR, one of the key players worldwide in the hydrocarbon industry, to further develop the downstream sector in the country with this strategic initiative, since this is the first polypropylene plant to be realised in Azerbaijan."
The contract with SOCAR will strengthen Maire Tecnimont's presence in the Caspian Area through its expertise in petrochemicals segment.
