An equal joint venture of Mitsui & Co and Celanese Corp began production of methanol at a plant in Dallas, Texas, as scheduled, with an annual production capacity of 1.3 mln tons. The plant ranks as the largest US methanol production facility. The companies will evenly split the output of the site, sources have said.
"This investment provides us with supply certainty for a critical raw material and allows the acetyl chain to gain the economic benefit of abundant low-cost US natural gas," Celanese CEO and chairman Mark Rohr said. The project was completed in 21 months, Rohr said, adding that it was "the most efficient and economical greenfield methanol plant in recent industry history."
