New plastic additive which improves melt strength and processing of polylactic acid

18-Sep-08
Rohm and Haas, a global pioneer in specialty materials industry has unveiled Paraloid BPMS 250, a new plastics additive which improves the melt strength and processing of polylactic acid (PLA) and its alloys, corn-derived compostable materials for clear packaging applications like thermoform or vacuform disposable, clamshell-type food containers. As it preserves PLA clarity, Paraloid™ BPMS 250 is a welcome tool for packaging manufacturers who must meet retailers' increasing demands for attractive, environmentally advanced packaging. Paraloid BPMS 250 adds higher melt strength to PLA as is processed during film and sheet extrusion, blown film extrusion or calendaring. Further, it makes possible high line speeds, cuts equipment difficulties and curtails costs. Adding the high molecular weight acrylic Paraloid BPMS 250 at levels as low as just two percent of the mixture increases the melt elasticity of the blend without affecting the clarity of the final product. Paraloid BPMS 250 also meets strict food packaging safety regulations. The product complies with U.S. FDA requirements and EU Directive 2002/72/EC.
