Nova has planned to upgrade its ethylene plant in Corunna so as to make it globally competitive Nova Chemicals announced it is revamping its ethylene plant, boosting production by 20 to 30% with the installation of new furnaces and compressors. The ethylene plant supplies other plants in the area that make polyethylene and styrene. The total cost of modernizing should amount to US$260 million.
Petrochemical companies are making independent decisions to rebuild their infrastructure based on increased demand for their products and the Chemical Valley's proximity to key markets. The Nova announcement is the latest in a wave of investments in the Chemical Valley, including:
* US$800 million for upgrades and expansion at the Suncor Refinery, including a low-sulphur diesel fuel plant.
* US$110 million Air Products Canada Ltd. hydrogen production plant to serve two refineries in Sarnia.
* US$65 million at Imperial Oil Ltd. Sarnia refinery to cut sulphur levels in diesel fuel.
