Qapco awards two EPC contracts to CTCI Corporation of Taiwan

12-Mar-12
The Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) has awarded two engineering, procurement and construction contracts to integrated engineering and construction firm CTCI Corporation of Taiwan. The contracts awarded to CTCI are worth QR604 mln, with the option of an additional QR176 mln, raising the total investment cost of Phase 1 to QR780 mln. Phase 1 of the two-phase project involves installing new furnaces and an ethylene storage tank and aims to meet the international standards of safety and environment by modifying, revamping and changing some technical equipment at Qapco’s main ethylene production facility in Mesaieed Industrial City. The main benefits would be direct and significant reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions to the air, reuse of coke inside the furnaces which will prevent soil and air contamination, better efficiency in fuel consumption, and improved yield which will improve productivity and as a consequence reduce harmful waste. Phase 2 of the project, estimated to cost QR2 bln as of Q1-2013, aims to increase the overall production to reach between 950,000 to 1,000,000 metric tons of ethylene. This phase is still under study by Qapco.
