Qatar Petroleum (QP) has plans for a new multi-billion mega petrochemical complex with four integrated plants with a combined production capacity of 2.8 mln tpa of petrochemical products. The complex is being developed in Mesaieed, along with intermediate and other industrial projects, individually or jointly with other partners. The grassroots petrochemical complex will produce propylene, polypropylene, styrene and polystyrene, and primarily use available feedstock from Mesaieed and Ras Laffan operating and planned projects. The feedstocks will comprise 75% of different types of naphtha and 25% will be ethane gas.
The first phase of the project will comprise a mixed ethane and naphtha cracker with ethylene capacity of about one mln tpa and will include special process units to convert some ethylene to propylene. The complex will produce polypropylene, polystyrene, ethylene glycol and mixed xylenes among others which in turn will provide raw materials and many investment opportunities.
