Resin for metal insert molding of thin, light consumer electronics parts

16-Oct-08
Bayer MaterialScience LLC (BMS) has unveiled a new polycarbonate/ polyester resin, Makroblend® UT5205 for plastic-over-metal moulding (metal-insert moulding) for applications in smaller, thinner and lighter consumer electronics. BMS' Makroblend UT5205 resin was specifically designed to address the engineering challenges associated with metal insert molding. Makroblend UT5205 resin is formulated in a specific way which reduces the stresses associated with metal insert moulding as well as in everyday heating and cooling cycles (such as when a device is left in a hot or frigid car). In addition, the new resin exhibits exceptional chemical resistance and hydrolysis resistance relative to typical thermoplastic blends that tend to degrade in heat and humidity, which is important for ultra thin compact electronics. Metal insert molding is a process that utilizes a simple metal frame with plastic injection-molded around it. The plastic-metal hybrid is perfectly suited for compact electronics as metal provides the stiffness required for the part, while the plastic provides durability, high gloss and aesthetic effects such as contours. Metal insert molding is also a simpler, more cost-effective manufacturing process than alternatives like die-casting, which requires the use of costly metal and die-cast parts, or glass-filled plastics, which are prone to fracturing and can result in poor surface finish.
