Second fire at cracker prompts Formosa to appraise facilities

29-Jul-10
After a second fire at its naphtha cracking complex in Mailiao, Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) plans to conduct an overall renewal of its facilities. FPG has formed an elite team to conduct an overall review of its facilities to prevent recurrence of any industrial safety incident. Cause for the fire at the complex`s second oil refinery, that was brought under control after raging for 44 hours, has yet to be determined. To cope with feedstock ethylene shortages triggered by shutdown of the complex`s first olefin plant, FPG plans procure material from the spot markets and ship ethylene from Formosa Plastics Corp., U.S.A.
