UK's BPI to close Northeast England facility

26-Nov-08
UK's British Polythene Industries PLC (BPI) will shut operations at its Stockton-on-Tees facility in Northeast England due to repeated losses in the previous two years, coupled with the drastic decline in demand from the UK's construction sector. The manufacturing facility, part of bpi.industrial division sourced 40% of volumes to the construction sector with products like duty sacks, industrial and agricultural films. This decision will result in 165 probable job losses. However, the company has proposed to transfer the operations carried at Stockton to other sites within the BPI Group, including Ardeer and Greenock. Due to impact of the construction and broader economic downturn, the Stockon-on-Tees site is expected to post significant loss of £2.5 mln in 2008.
