An innovative lid made of high impact polystyrene
has been developed to indicate temperature of
hot coffee in a cup. It shows colour change
from dark brown to bright red as temperature
increases and returns to dark brown when the
coffee cools. A special additive developed by
Mitsui Food, Japan, incorporated in high impact
polystyrene, undergoes change. Initially a processor
in China will produce these lids for the Australian
market. It will then be introduced in the Asian
countries. The product looks set to attract
significant attention from the global take-out
coffee market. In the US alone, an estimated
50 billion drinks are served in disposable cups,
made from high impact polystyrene. While the
initial target beverage is coffee, it can be
used for any hot beverage. This lid can produce
strong colour contrast for beverages served
at cafe and food service outlet.
Other similarly injection molded products manufactured include spoons that change colour according to the temperature of the beverage that is being stirred. Another application in use for a couple of years in India is a color-changing cup for children. This cup changes colors not only from red to brown and vice versa, but in a myriad of colors that are appealing to children.
