Artificial Plastic Grass, Monofilament and Fibrillated PE, PP and PA Market Growth Potential
Artificial grass based on polymer has a bright future

Plastic grass known as an artificial grass has been in existence from early nineteen sixties. Artificial plastic grass has undergone significant change over the last four decades, since the time it was introduced and the first installation in 1964-65 in USA , and has evolved as a new generation artificial plastic grass.
Polymers those are used to manufacture artificial grass are LLDPE, HDPE, PP, PA PE had a major share of the total global consumption of 63,000 tons in 2005. Artificial grass grew by 18% from 2001 until 2005, and is expected to grow at 15% from 2005 until 2010, reaching a level of 125,000 tons in 2010.
The global distribution of polymer used for artificial grass is:
PE 35-37 KT (57%)
PP 18-20 KT (32%)
PA 6-7 KT (11%)
There are essentially two type of yarns used for artificial grass:
•  Fibrillated yarn with denier from 8000 to 11000.
•  Monofilament yarn with denier ranging from 980-1450.
Presently fibrillated yarn has a higher share of the artificial grass (almost 90%). However, the monofilament yarn is expected to grow faster. It is expected that its share will reach 30% in 2010. The yarn for artificial grass is extruded in the form of sheet or monofilament. Texturized yarn is often used depending upon applications.

Europe combined with the Middle East and Africa has about 43% share of the total market. North America has almost 33% share. Asia Pacific region has 21% share while South America has almost 3% share of the global use of artificial grass in 2005.
Artificial grass is mainly used for sport fields such as soccer, hockey, golf, rugby, tennis & multi sport pitches. Artificial grass normally has a life span of 3 years. However, properly designed artificial grass, with UV stabilized polymer, could survive even for 7-8 years.
Since artificial grass provides ease of maintenance compared to the natural grass, it is expected to grow faster in future.
