• Shri Satyendra Kumar, Director, NITI Aayog
Attended by over 200 participants representing brand owners, plastic producers, recyclers, and policymakers, the session addressed critical bottlenecks and proposed progressive measures:
• Pricing of recyclates: Experts voiced concern over recycled materials being costlier than virgin plastic, impacting market competitiveness.
• Industry status for recyclers: Stakeholders recommended formal recognition to access policy benefits, easier financing, and better infrastructure.
• Product design: Brand owners were urged to shift to single-polymer manufacturing to enhance recyclability and ease of post-consumer segregation.
• Informal sector inclusion: Proposals were made to improve working conditions of waste pickers, including ergonomically designed tools to reduce health risks and improve dignity of labor.
The discussion established a multi-stakeholder blueprint for India's recycling sector that is inclusive, efficient, and innovation-driven.
