Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU), a CPM labour arm has decided to go on a 3-day strike at Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd. from August 18 as their demand for permanent employment of 183 contract workers made during similar strike on April 8 have fallen on the deaf ears of the management. As per the HPL Employees' Union, the employment of the contract workers were still temporary on contract basis which is why they were obligated to go on strike. However, the HPL management has made a request to CITU to avoid this strike as it will adversely affect the operations at the plant and said that it was difficult to make all the 183 contract workers permanent at once.
