LyondellBasell Industries (through its wholly owned subsidiary Basell Service Company B.V.), the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago, Ltd. (NGC), National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago, Ltd. NEC) and Lurgi GmbH have signed a five-way project development agreement for construction and operation of an integrated polypropylene complex in Trinidad and Tobago.
The project will include the production of 490,000 tpa of polyolefins based on three world-scale plants, including a methanol plant and a methanol-to-propylene (MTP®) plant. The polypropylene complex will use LyondellBasell's Spherizone technology and the feedstock (propylene) for the production will be sourced from Lurgi's MegaMethanol® and MTP® technologies.
According to a senior executive of LyondellBassel, the main purpose of the project is to maintain a regular supply of polyolefins to the local plastics industry, the highly emerging South American market and the vast North American market. The project will also leverage the leadership position of NEC and NEG in Trinidad and Tobago along with the hi-tech technology and marketing potential of LyondellBasell and Lurgi.
