The joint-venture PET recycling plant that Coca-Cola opened two years ago in Spartanburg, South Carolina, has closed, as reported by Plastics News. Neither Coke nor United Resource Recovery has made any official announcement about the closing of their joint venture plant, NURRC. But several sources confirmed to Plastics News that NURRC closed the first week in March, all 50 factory workers were laid off, and that virtually the entire office staff was laid off two weeks ago. The plant was set up to enable Coke to achieve its goal of incorporating 10% recycled content in its PET bottles by 2010 and 25% by 2015.
