Dow proposes toluene diisocyanate (TDI) expansion at Camaçari

11-Mar-08
Dow Polyurethanes is to conduct feasibility study to expand toluene diisocyanate (TDI) production at its facility in Camaçari, Brazil, to turn Camaçari into a leading world-class production facility. The proposed expansion, which involves a new process technology, will support growing demand for end-use polyurethane products in Latin America, an important market for Dow due to its sustained overall economic growth and robust chemical sector. Major decisions on the project are expected by Q4-08. Subject to approvals, the new TDI capacity is estimated to come online in 2011. Dow is Latin America's largest TDI producer, with a capacity to produce 60,000 tpa. Stimulated by increased consumption of polyurethane products, demand for TDI in Latin America is expected to grow at 1-2% above gross domestic product through 2015. TDI is a critical raw material that is combined with performance-based polyols to create flexible polyurethane foams for automotive, furniture and bedding applications.
