Earthquake and typhoon resistant PS foam homes pioneered in Japan

11-Aug-08
Japan Dome House Co., Ltd has created modular home kits (igloo shaped) using expanded polystyrene foam which boast of high energy efficiency and resistance to earthquakes and typhoons. Being 25 feet wide, 13 feet tall with 475 sq ft of floor space, the prefabricated pieces only weigh 175lbs thereby enabling people to carry the home around and assemble it in a convenient manner. Having passed the safety qualifications of Japan's Land and Transport Ministry, the PS foam homes can withstand the likes of earthquakes, typhoons and normal wear and tear. The Aso Farm Land in Kyushu has around 480 of these domes that serve as lodging, shops and recreational facilities.
