As a solution to the problem of material shortage in Europe, Spanish PET producer La Seda de Barcelona plans to build a 700,000 tpa PTA (purifed terephthalic acid) plant in Sines, Portugal. Europe currently imports 400,000 tons of PTA from Asia. PTA is a key raw material in the manufacture of polyester and PET. Work has commenced on the €400 mln plant to located at Artenius Sines, and the plant is scheduled to begin commercial operation in Q1-2010. PTA is a key raw material in the manufacture of polyester and PET polymers and the plant will help address the region's current shortfall in PTA domestic supply. The Spanish group is considering the possibility of purchasing PET recycling plant in the city of Portalegre, where LSB already owns a 70,000 tpa PET production facility.
