Mexicos' federal government has developed the Ethylene XXI project, estimated to require an investment outlay of US$2.5-3 bln, as part of its plans to improve the viability of the petrochemicals industry, in particular the ethane-ethylene-polyethylene chain. Mexican conglomerate Alfa is one of the eleven companies that has expressed interest in competing for the Ethylene XXI petrochemicals project. Eleven domestic and foreign companies are expected to bid for the supply of 66,000b/d of ethane for 15 years in an auction to be held by state oil company Pemex to supply the complex.
The project involves the construction of 5 plants in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz state - one ethylene cracker with capacity of 1 mln tpa, one ethylene oxide, one polypropylene and two polyethylene facilities - to reduce imports of petrochemicals derived from ethylene and propylene.
