Naphtha exports from India are on the rise, mainly due to weak domestic demand and consumption. Exports of naphtha have grown to 2.5 mln tons from 1.9 mln tons. Domestic naphtha consumption has fallen as a result of increased availability of natural gas in the country. Reliance Industries has started pumping out natural gas from fields in East Coast, followed by the government’s allocations to various plants which have been using naphtha as feedstock. Plants prefer natural gas over naphtha as it is cleaner and gives a longer life to units. Indian Oil Corp will export 32% more naphtha in 2009/10- 2.5 mln tpa in the fiscal 2009-10 compared with previous fiscals’ 1.9 mln tons.
