Tecnimont SpA has won a US$816 million contract for the building of a new petrochemical plant, the 'Q-Chem II Derivatives' in a deal signed in Doha. Upon completion by the end of 2008 the project is to comprise a 350,000 tpa high density polyethyleneplant and a 'normal alpha olefin'. The plant, slated to be one of the biggest and most important in Gulf region, will be built in Mesaieed, Qatar, by 'Q-Chem', a joint venture created in 1997 between Qatar Petroleum and Chevron Phillips Chemical.
Tecnimont, an Italy-based worldwide leader in the construction of polypropylene and polyethylene plants, will lead a consortium comprising the Korean company Daewoo Engineering and Construction and will especially manage the planning, the supply of materials and the supervision of the construction, while Daewoo Engineering will focus on the construction side only.
