Reliance staff, contractor booked for IPCL blast as fire shuts one 120,000 ton unit

The Nagothane police has booked five top Reliance officials and the contractor under section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code for causing death due to negligence at the chemical explosion in the Reliance-owned Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (IPCL) plant on Friday. No arrests have been made so far. The Reliance officials who have been booked include the Nagothane president of Reliance Industries Limited, vice president (technical), plant manager, plant supervisor, safety supervisor, and the contractor who was employed at the plant to do the repair work. Reliance Industries has shut only one unit with capacity to produce 120,000 tons at its Nagothane petrochemicals plant where a fire broke out on Friday. The others units are functioning normally. In all, the plant has an annual ethylene capacity of 400,000 tons.
