After rejecting a compensation proposal, representatives of the residents of Mailiao Township have suspended talks with the Formosa Plastics Group (FPG). The representatives warned FPG that protests over pollution caused by two fires in the month, will continue. Locals have filed complaints of particulate matter produced during the blaze having caused acid rain and pollution that has killed fish and clams raised by aquaculturists in the area. Victims of the pollution refused to accept Formosa’s promise to cover all damages with a total payment of NT$450 mln (US$14.16 mln).
The protesters demanded that FPG pay for health checks for the residents, as well as health compensation. Formosa argues that should the company yield, the protesters will simply demand even more.
